She was the only child of a single mom with five children, Jones had a difficult and a squatter's growing up. Her mother was constantly on the move as well as having been living in a basement church for a period of time. Jones was one of the college's best hurdlers after entering. She was the winner of the 100-meter hurdle during the 2002 NCAA Track & Field Championship. In addition, she was a part of the team finishing second for 100-meters relay. Jones was the winner of the NCAA Indoor Hurdles competition in the years 2003 and the 2004. Jones began her track career in 2005 when she graduated from university. She won each of the Torino Memorial and the Heusden Track races that same year.

Brandt moved to Auckland, New Zealand from Cape Town South Africa in later in her adolescence. Brandt's talent was discovered in Auckland through the local Director of casting Brandt. She was cast in the part of Naevia in her role on the Starz show Spartacus Blood and Sand and Spartacus Gods of the Arena. Lesley-Ann Brandt was born on 2nd December 1981, in Cape Town South Africa. She is an New Zealand actress with a great talents. Lesley Brandt, along with the rest of her family, relocated from the United States to Auckland New Zealand back in 1999.
